Tregiffian Farm is a traditional working dairy and beef farm that has been in the Phillips´ family for five generations.
The dairy herd consists of around 50 Friesian cows − all with names! The cows are milked twice a day and the milk is collected and taken to be made into
Cornish clotted cream.
The cows graze in the fields in the summer months and, on average, will produce one calf per year.
The calves will be weaned off the cows at a week old, and are then
hand-reared for around three months. They will then be old enough to go out to grass. The dairy calves will join the milking herd after about two years. The beef calves
are reared on a traditional grass and cereal diet and are sold off the farm after around eighteen months.
All the animals are housed in sheds in winter and are fed on silage (preserved grass, cut in early summer) until the fields are ready to be grazed again in spring.
There are also chickens on the farm to provide tasty, fresh eggs for breakfast. And Ellie,
our friendly springer spaniel, is always on hand to welcome you back after a day’s sightseeing.
Derek & Vicki have been welcoming guests onto the farm since 1990 and guarantee a warm welcome and the very best of Cornish hospitality.
